Welcome to The Bee Gees.net - The Bee Gees Biography

The Bee Gees were a renowned vocal troop of three brothers form England by the name Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. Their parents were from Manchester England but they moved to Brisbane Australia, a place where they started their career in music. Their global victorious career began when they returned to England and joined an Australia born producer named Robert Stigwood. The Bee Gees group achieved multiple awards and enjoyed success in recording industry for almost forty years.

The Bee Gees trio began to sing in synchronization in the early 1950’s at their hometown. There is an interesting account of an incident that inspired the Bee Gees to pursue a career in singing. Once they where to lip sync a prerecorded music in the nearby Gaumont cinema, Accidentally the record was broken by Maurice as they were rushing to reach their destination on time, left with no alternative they performed live and acclaimed a phenomenal response from the audience. The incident helped the group to realize it’s true artistic potentials. In the year 1958 the family migrated to Australia where the trio kept singing. They initially called themselves Rattlesnakes, later on as Wee Johny Hayes and then as Bluecats. A racetrack promoter by the name Bill Goode witnessed the brother’s performance at Brisbane’s Speedway Circuit, impressed by the performance he introduced them to radio DJ Bill Gates. It was Bill Goode who gave them identity as BEE GEES. In 1960 Bee Gees troop also got the opportunity to perform on Television, later on they started performing frequently on the resorts of the Queensland.

As the number of audience increased for Bee Gees, Barry’s ability of lyric writing attracted the attention of Col Joye, the first Australian rock and roll singer who helped the group to get a recording deal from Festival Records in the year 1963 under their stage name “Bee Gees”. The vocal troop released 2 or 3 singles in a year initially based on Barry’s lyrics. Their album of 1965 titled Wine and Women was quite successful which led to the release of their first long playing album titled The Bee Gees Sings & Plays fourteen Barry Gibb Songs. In late 1966 the vocal brothers decided to relocate to England while the rest of the family remained in Australia.

However the Bee Gees were not very confident about their success in England. Hugh Gibb their father sent demos to Brian Epstein the director of NEMS. Brian Epstein then passed the tapes to Robert Stigwood. The Bee Gees got an opportunity in 1967 to go for a five-year contract with Polydor Records after an audition test with Stigwood. The Bee Gees began their work quickly for their first international LP. Stigwood declared publicly that the Bee Gees as the “Best new talent to perform in 1967"and began comparing them with The Beatles. The Bee Gees first British single titled "New York Mining Disaster 1941”, climbed in top 20 in both UK and US and the second “To Love Somebody" climbed in top 20 in US. Later on many of these vocal troop songs witnessed the rare air of the peak on several US and UK Charts. All the songs The Bee Gees sang where based on their own lyrics except for "Such a Shame".

In the year 1969, there was a split in the group when Robin began to feel that Stigwood is unduly inclined towards Barry bestowing him the responsibility of the leader of the group. Robin quit the group 1969 and started his solo career claiming huge success in Europe. Barry and Maurice continued as the Bee Gees with the inclusion of their sister Leslie in this troop to maintain the trio.

The three brothers again joined hands an year later 1970, this time they concentrated on themes like loneliness and heartache. Although they lost their grip among the British Audiences, their popularity remained consistent in U.S ,Bee Gees managed to touch #3 in U.S with their album "Lonely Days" and album "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" was their first U.S. hit #1. The Bee Gees talents can also be seen in the soundtrack for 1971 movie titled “Melody”.

Bee Gees album E.S.P. released in 1987, did a record business selling over 3 million copies of the album. Bee Gees single named "You Win Again" went to #1 in several countries of the world. In the year 1997 the Bee Gees did a live recital named One Night Only in Las Vegas, more over 5 million CD’s of this live concert were sold round the globe. One of the active and youngest member of this troop Andy died 1988 by myocarditis but the tragedy did not divulge the Bee Gees.

The Bee Gees released another album titled One (1989) featuring a song "Wish You Were Here" dedicating to Andy. In 2001 they released album titled “This Is Where” as their final album. In 2003 again they suffered with a massive tragedy when Maurice, acting also as the musical director of the Bee Gees in their final years died from a strangulated intestine. Later on the surviving member of The Bee Gees proclaimed that they will carry on the name "Bee Gees" in his memory. The Bee Gees were inducted into “The R&R Hall of Fame” in 1997. A decision was taken by the sole living member of the group to retire the group name, leaving it to represent the three brothers together, forever.
